I know now that self-love doesn’t mean being blind to our ever-changing, ever-aging human bodies. It means appreciating them for those very reasons.

Through the years, my relationship with my body ran the spectrum from reluctant acceptance to active dislike. More energy was poured into molding my legs, abs, or arms into better versions than was spent loving my body just as it was. It was just flaws, gripes, and an impossible quest to reach some number on the scale. I knew that having a goal of perfection would always end in disappointment, but I didn’t know what the alternative was.

Then I saw two pink lines on a pregnancy test.
